Since 1955, more than 1.25 million trucks and 2 million cabs have been built at MAN’s Munich factory. To mark 70 years of manufacturing, around 20,000 people including staff and guests celebrated with an Oktoberfest-style event complete with a ferris wheel and obligatory beer tent.

MAN CEO, Alexander Vlaskamp, said: “We can all be proud of the history of this location. The development and series production of our eTruck ‘made in Munich’ is the latest proof of the plant's innovative strength and versatility, as well as a historic milestone for MAN and the location. Together, we have always found the right solutions to every challenge and successfully combined history and modernity. This powerful tradition also provides a solid foundation on which to build the future.”

The Landerwermann family of showmen supplied the ferris wheel with their fleet of MAN trucks. The 40m high structure requires 2,500 tonnes of material to build and has capacity for 200 passengers.

Similarly, Paulaner Brewery in Munich delivered the event’s beer in MAN vehicles, including in some fully electric trucks. After MAN announced series production of its eTrucks at the Munich plant Paulaner Brewery ordered two eHGVs.

Combining technology of the future with innovations of the past, the event featured a bouncy castle, interactive AI stand to design a futuristic MAN truck, historical stalls, carousels, swingboat and a brass band. MAN gathered 40 historic vehicles for the occasion including an eTruck and team buses for FC Bayern Munich and TSV 1860 Munich.

Around 8,000 employees work at the 1 million sq m plant which has expanded over the years to increase capacity. As well as the factory, the site includes a test track, neo-Gothic castle and a combined heat and power plant. In Munich-Karlsfeld, MAN is working on a geothermal project to heat its production facilities and the local network from 2028. This is part of the company’s goal to reduce its global greenhouse gas by 70% compared with 2019 by 2030.
