As part of its commitment to reduce fleet emissions, DPD is trailing MAN eTGX tractor units. The trucks will be based out of the company’s Hinckley Hub 4 and deployed across dedicated DPD routes paired with standard trailers. Before the vehicles enter operation, drivers will be introduced to the technology and trained on how to get the most out of the vehicles.
Tracey Perry, sales director truck, bus and coach, said: "We’re proud to partner with DPD on this important journey towards electrification of their HGV fleet. These trials will provide invaluable insights for both companies as we work towards a greener future.
“As a leading commercial vehicle manufacturer with a growing portfolio of battery-powered solutions, MAN is committed to investing in cutting-edge, climate-neutral transport technologies and actively supporting our customers in decarbonising their operations.
"Achieving the 1.5-degree target of the Paris Climate Agreement requires bold action, and electric trucks like our eTGX are a critical part of that mission."
In addition to this trialing partnership, MAN is working with DPD to establish the best electric solution for its double deck trailers. With diesel vehicles, the use of double deck trailers has helped the company to minimise the number of trucks it needs to move packages. This is a trend it hopes to continue by streamlining its fleet to be as effective as possible, creating maximum capacity for parcels with the smallest number of vehicles. The first vehicle tailored to DPD’s specific requirements is due to be ready for testing later this year.
Tim Jones, director of marketing, communications and sustainability, DPDgroup UK said: “Electric HGVs have the potential to become a viable solution in the future, and we now believe we can get the configuration we need to maintain our double decker trailer fleet, which has enabled us to reduce the overall number of HGVs we put on the road for many years. We are keen to help develop electric trucks that can work for us in the real world.”
